The Judicial Vetting Commission has initiated an evaluation procedure regarding Ion Covalciuc, candidate for the position of judge at the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ).
This decision follows the submission of the candidate’s file by the Superior Council of Magistracy, to be assessed in accordance with the provisions of Law no. 65/2023 on the external evaluation of judges and prosecutors.
In this context, the Commission requested that the candidate complete and submit, within the legally established period of up to 10 days from the date of the request, the following documents: the Asset and Personal Interests Declaration for the past five years (including relevant expenses), the Ethics Questionnaire, and the Declaration regarding close persons who have been active, over the last five years, in the judiciary, the prosecution, or public service.
Previously, Ion Covalciuc participated in the competition for the SCJ judgeship but withdrew from the competition at the stage of the public hearings. Consequently, the Commission took note of the withdrawal without issuing an evaluation report.
The Commission is currently conducting three evaluation procedures for candidates to the Supreme Court of Justice. Additionally, the Superior Council of Magistracy recently approved two evaluation reports prepared by the Commission concerning other SCJ candidates, thereby supporting the advancement of the process to fill vacant positions at the Supreme Court.
